THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
To understand suffering, to understand the origination of suffering, to understand extinction of suffering, to understand the path leading to the extinction of suffering: this is called right understanding. Being resolved on renunciation, on freedom from ill will, on harmlessness: This is called right though. Abstaining from lying, abstaining from divisive speech, abstaining from abusive speech, abstaining from idle chatter: This is called right speech. Abstaining from taking life, abstaining from stealing, abstaining from unchastity: This is called right action. Not to engage in trades or occupations which, either directly or indirectly, result in the harm to other living beings, including the scheming, persuading, hinting, belittling and persuing gain with gain from others: This is right livelihood. Proper effort is not the effort to make something particular happen. It is the effort to be aware and awake in each moment, the effort to overcome laziness and defilement, the effort to make each activity of our day meditation: This is right effort. Remaining focused on one’s body, feelings and mental qualities in and of themselves, ardent, aware and mindful and having put aside worldly desires and aversions: This is right mindfullness. Withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unwholsome states, moving the mind onto the object; this is the first state of meditation, born from detachment. Further withdrawal, still moving the mind onto the object and now retaining the object in the mind; this is the second state of meditation, born of concentration. With the fading of pleasure, the mind remains in equanimity, mindful and fully aware, physically sensative to pleasure; this is the third state of mind, equanimous and mindful. Abandoning pleasure and pain, as with the earlier disappearance of desire and distress; this is the fourth state of mind, purity of equanimity and mindfull of neither pleasure nor in pain: This is the right concentration.
