THE FIVE PRINCIPLES OF YOGA

Release the tension in your muscles, letting go of fears and worries and put your entire body at rest. Revitalize your nervous system and achieve inner peace, refreshed and rejuvenated. This relaxed, centered feeling, manifest into all of our activities, helps conserve our energy. This is Proper Relaxation. The physical body is meant to move and exercise. Postures work on all parts of the body, stretching and toning muscles, enhancing the flexibility and strength of the spine and improving circulation. The body is a vehicle for the soul on its journey towards perfection. Postures develop not only the body but broaden the mental and spiritual capacities. Movement is guided by breath; breath and body are one. This is Proper Exercise. Breath full, deep, slow and rhythmically, making use of all the parts of your lungs to increase your oxygen intake. Regulate the length, depth and duration of your breathing, retaining the air within your lungs before exhaling. Breathing recharges the body and regulates the flow of the life force. Control of the subtle energy within the vital breath leads to control of the mind. This is Proper Breathing. What we eat directly affects our body and our mind. Food nourishes the body, increases mental efficiency and opens spiritual awareness. Food intake should be well balanced, based on natural, energy dense foods and eaten in moderation. Eating a diet rich in milk, cheese, beans, nuts and vegetables, devoid of flesh, keeps the body light, the nervous system energized, the immune system strong and the mind calm. This is Proper Diet. Positive thinking and meditation remove negative thoughts and contribute to vibrant health and a joyful mind. To achieve lasting happiness and absolute peace, we must first know how to calm the mind, turning our concentration inward upon the self, we can deepen our connection with the greater consciousness.  When the surface of the lake is still, you can see the bottom very clearly. When the mind is very still, with no thoughts or desires, you can see the self.  This is called yoga.  This is Proper Meditation.
