THE EIGHT LIMBS OF YOGA
Do not engage in activities which either directly or indirectly, result in the harm to other living beings. This is Ahimsa. Do not be untruthful or lie to other persons around you. This is Satyam. Practice moderation in all things. This is Brahmacharya. Do not steal from any other being. This is Asteya. Do not be greedy or occupy yourself with material possessions. This is Aparigraha. These are the Yamas. Do be pure, adhering to internal and external standards of cleanliness. This is Saucha. Do be content with your life and all things within it. This is Santosha. Do practice simplicity in all things. This is Tapas. Do study the sacred texts daily with a joyous commitment. This is Swadhyaya. Do live always within the awareness of the divine presence. Surrender to God’s Will. This is Ishwara Pranidhana. These are the Niyamas. The physical body is meant to move and exercise. Postures work on all parts of the body, stretching and toning muscles, enhancing the flexibility and strength of the spine and improving circulation. Postures develop not only the body but broaden the mental and spiritual capacities. These are Asanas. Breath full, deep, slow and rhythmically, making use of all the parts of your lungs to increase oxygen intake. Regulate the length, depth and duration of your breathing, retaining the air within your lungs before exhaling. Breathing recharges the body and regulates the flow of the life force. Control of the subtle energy within the vital breathe leads to control of the mind. This is Pranayama. Withdraw the senses and still the mind, putting aside worldly desires, feelings and aversions. This is Pratyahara. a Concentrate on the object, still further withdrawing the senses and stilling the mind. This is Dharana. When this is achieved, it leads to meditation, a state of pure thought and absorption within the object. This is Dhyana. When Dhyana is mastered, it leads to the experience of oneness in the superconscious state. This is the deepest and highest state of meditation; singular consciousness where body and mind have been transcended and the yogi is one with God. This is Samadhi.
