Ocean Swimming Tips
by Adam Masterson
The ocean can be a great place to swim. It's fun to play on the shoreline and even venture out into the waves. There are some ocean swimming tips that you really need to know if you want to be safe, though. First of all, you really shouldn't swim in the ocean unless there's a lifeguard on duty. If there is a lifeguard, you may want to introduce yourself to them and make sure that they know you are there. If there isn't a lifeguard, you should at least make sure that the beach is heavily populated and that you are within sight and earshot of several people. Also, before you swim, you should be aware of any beach warnings. Sometimes beaches are closed to swimming due to a number of factors. Those could be anything from contaminated water to a jellyfish infestation to a recent shark attack. In any case, they're likely to be things that you don't want to mess with. Next, wear a bright swimsuit. That will make you easy to spot in the water, just in case there's any sort of problem. Remember that the ocean is an endless sea of, basically, one color. If you wear a color that stands out against that, you'll be like a bobbing beacon in the water. Finally, be careful of strong currents. They can quickly turn to rip tides and pull you away from shore. If they do, don't waste time. Start swimming inward, but parallel to the shore. If you swim directly in, you'll fight the current and get pulled further out to sea. At the same time, signal or yell periodically for help, so that people on the beach know you're in distress.
