How to Add Color to Paper Flowers

by Jane Morris

Contrary to popular belief not all crepe paper is created equally. In this article we will look at how to add color to paper flowers. When making paper flowers there are two types of crepe paper you will want to consider using. You can choose between simplex and duplex paper. Depending on the use of the flowers you are going to make will depend on the type of paper. Ideally a crepe paper centerpiece for your home is where you could easily use the simplex paper. If you are making the flowers for your wedding or for someone else you would be better to use the duplex crepe paper.

The next decision you need to make is the brand of paper you will use. Some brands make it more difficult to add color to while others make it easy. The primary goal of this article is to help you decide how to add color to paper flowers and we will start by telling you the best type of crepe paper.

One of the best brands of crepe paper we have found is bleed resistant, fade resistant and fire resistant. Each sheet is 20 inches wide by 7.5 feet long. Out of that one sheet you can easily make a dozen flowers. We have been very successful with adding color to this brand of crepe paper.

There are a few additional supplies you will need to add the color to the paper flowers:

o Watercolor paints and an assortment of brushes

o Markers

o Crayons

o Chalk - colored and white (powdered is best)

o Powder eye shadow and brush (rouge)

Please add
your comments.

o Water

You will need to make sure the crepe paper you are working with is waterproof and will not run. To do this you need to use a piece of scrap paper. Start by sprinkling a tiny amount of water on to the scrap paper. If it does not run then try each of the above mentioned coloring methods or the one(s) you plan on using.

We cannot stress enough that you make sure the paper is waterproof and will not run. There is nothing worse in paper flower making than to complete a beautiful flower and then you add color to it to find out that the paper runs. You will have ruined your flower. So please take the few minutes to test it out on the scrap paper!

Once you are certain the paper will tolerate color you can use either the brushes to add the paint, or your finger tips to spread the eye shadow or rouge on the flowers or a small brush. For the markers, crayons and chalk you will want to use the actual marker, chalk or crayon.

Always start with a small portion and add only a tiny bit of color if you like it then continue on adding the color to the paper flowers. Once you add the color there is no removing it so again you should try out the colors you want to use on a scrap piece of paper first.

Just follow the directions above for how to add color to paper flowers and you should have no problems at all.
